In regards to RAID...Yeah you can do RAID 0 or 1, I think via software RAID.  Though, as you said, that still means leaving it powered up all the time.

Another option is some of the new NAS devices out there (like Netgear&#039;s ReadyNAS) can act as a streaming iTunes library that acts via network.  I&#039;m not sure how the performance of that would be from the local machine, though.
