Good show guys… there are a lot of options out there and personal recommendations are best. At the end of the day, I think everyone is trying to tweak the combination of options that will give them the best value i.e. less maintenance fee in the long-run. So keep the personal recommendations coming.

A couple of things concerning domain names:

-Try to get a dot com if you can. If the dot com you want is unavailable, if your users accidentally type the dot com instead will they be led to a site you dont want them to see?
-Avoid dashes (hyphens) in the domain. It is difficult to remember.
-try typing it out to see if it looks strange. for example, if Pinoyboy wanted a blog called Pinoyboy Yes Sex, if you type it out as one word pinoyboyyessex.com Notice how the letters run together? It just looks bad on the address bar.
-If your host offers you a free domain with your hosting package, can you transfer it to a new host, or does it actually belong to your host? Check with your hosting company or read the FAQ’s to find out

As for hosting – you should also look at what you want to do in the near future. Are you goin to want to have many domains on your account at some point (perhaps you would like to host a site for a non-profit, or have multiple websites for different projects? I use Bluehost, which allows unlimited domains, 300 GB of space, and 3 TB of Xfer (link from my website and i’ll get a referral)

Readers of this post and its comments, we do not condone the blatant whoring of products for personal gain (if it can’t be helped).

The parenthetical above has changed Brad’s recommendation into an ad for “Bluehost” web hosting. We here at OMP, do not use Bluehost and do not clearly recommend any specific web host. Please use your best judgement when choosing a hosting company.

Any shared hosting service is probably a better deal for those who have any plans to host more than one site and dont expect a crapload of traffic on one site. Single domain plans usually have lower storage space/bandwidth but offer better relaiability. Shared hosting companies usually offer more space/bandwidth, but you are at the mercy of other users who might slow down your server. In my experience, the reliability of single hosting palns vs shared hosting plans are negligible. – and I have been on 3 different ones.

As a newbie, I find all this very daunting. Not for any other reason than the very fact that Blogger has been good and easy, requiring very little intervention from a tech level.

I suppose my only recommendation is to know what you are after – it is no use having a Ferrari when the speed limit in your area is only 50km/hr or wearing a pair of italian shoes in the snow because they look good. But then again what do I know…..maybe Italian shoes do look good covered in snow???

My moto: Buyers Beware!! Buy what you need and not what you want….or is it the other way around? Now I’m so very confused.
